Maternity & Newborn – two of the brief moments in time.

Photographer: Jeanine Thurston

Ok… so you’re pregnant feeling radiant, with glowing cheeks and a smile on your face.  Well – lets be honest, some of us feel that way for some of the pregnancy or pregnancies.  EVERY pregnant woman does have a beautiful glow and the state of pregnancy is such an amazing thing as it is.  Maternity portraits are a great way to document that amazing time in your life and remember what a beautiful journey it really was for you and your family.

Photographer: Jeanine Thurston

I tell people this all the time, and when you are pregnant – it is likely that you hear it from more than one of your friends, family – and even strangers.  Your new baby is born and before you blink your eyes they get big.  I’m not just talking about the difference between tiny bundle to crawling and walking either.  I couldn’t be more serious when I say they only look like a “newborn” for a couple weeks in most cases.  Don’t put off those amazing first couple weeks when your newborn is still in a slight state of slumber is the best time to get those curled up, sleepy time newborn images that make you say “Awhhhh”.  They make amazing birth announcements and a perfect way to start your child’s memories.  My children still point to photos of when they were newborns with pride and always ask for us to tell them stories of when they were babies – and my boys are only 3 and 4 years old right now.  It means the world to them as much as it does you.

Memory

Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.

~From the television show The Wonder Years

My boys: Jeanine Thurston

It is hardly ever more apparent that memories are so important – than the moment you bring a child into the world, fall in love or lose a loved one.  Each person, place, thing that we love makes us who we are and guides us to make choices on where we will go in life.  Photographing love & life… or maybe it is photographing the Love of Life is what has made me notice the little things that make each of us who we are.  Because the older we get the faster time seems to pass; our lives can become so busy that we loose some of those precious memories that brought us to where we are today.  Images allow us a joyful recollection of past events – and take us to places we once were, back to feelings we once had, and are a gateway to what brought us to where we are today.  It isn’t just people… it is expressions, giggles, smiles, pouty lips & tears, it is creations of our work anywhere from building, to art or even cooking – and encompasses a lifelong journey.  These memories are not only precious to us in preserving some of the footprints of our path, but are a joyful way to share our past with our future.  Our children, grandchildren and generations to come can learn from our beaten path.  Learning how we once once lived, and who and what we loved helps them in their journey to their future.

It is way beyond a picture on a piece of paper – it is about melding the past & present, gaping  generations, healing old wounds, and shedding tears in memory of the love and life we have had, and sharing with everyone.

I remember my first dog, going to school, blowing bubbles, my grandma’s smile, the smell outside after a spring rain, photographing my first wedding, my wedding day, my home growing up…. and yet, the visuals of people’s faces, expressions can be faded at times.  I have an image of my son’s tiny feet with my husband kissing them, and one of me snuggling my 1st son, and although I remember it happening – there is nothing like looking at that image and actually feeling that same feeling, as if it was just yesterday.

Maternity “Quick Take Thursday” (QTT)

Photographer: Jeanine Thurston

Many of moms- to- be out there may have had maternity photos cross your mind.  This is a beautiful time in your life when you are pregnant and planning for the extra life or two… or so coming into the world.  All that moving and kicking around, and so many don’t have photos to go back to those memories – especially the last month or so of the pregnancy.  Some just think about having a maternity session a little to late, many just “wish” they would have done a session after the fact, and still some would just rather have a few precious images but don’t want to do a big session.

“Quick Take Thursday” Maternity sessions are an affordable way to get a few gorgeous images of that beautiful belly of yours before the new addition is here!  It is a simple 30 minute session where we work on getting just a handful of really beautiful maternity images of you.  I offer this session on Thursday mornings between 8am-noon, by appointment only at my studio in Denver for only $30.  Images are displayed online to view for 90 days, and you get 2 for 1 on any print orders during the first 30 days that they are online.

While I suggest doing your maternity session between 32-36 weeks, you can take advantage of QTT at any time during your pregnancy, and even use it to document how your body has changed each trimester.  Because QTT is a limited time each Thursday – times do fill up quickly, so please call to set up your time well in advance.

Please feel free to e-mail or call me with any questions at all 720-566-9770!

Grandparents: Story Keepers

Photographer: Jeanine Thurston

Life is a story – the story of our journey in time.  Which is why it is so important to value the lessons of the past through interaction with the elderly and promoting the art of storytelling.  Whether caused by distance, busy schedules or a growing generation gap in the Internet age, it can be a challenge for grandparents to connect with their grandchildren – but learning from the past and relationships is such an important part of feeling part of a family.

Watching the twins grow

The Erickson Twins - as newborns

Peyton (top) Quinn (bottom) as newborns

One of my photography projects over the next 15 months  is photographing the Erickson twins.  Photographing them as newborns, I will be continuing to photograph them about every 8 weeks for the next year or so.  I continually tell people how fast their children will grow – and am very excited that we will be able to see this beautiful sister and brother get bigger along their way.  After our next session in a couple months I will also begin a blog page for them to write a little about the experiences of having twins too.  My fascination with twins may be due to having identical twin younger brothers, but in having two children of my own only a year apart – I’m also very curious at how children grow and change, especially during the first few years of their life.

Peyton at 3 months old

Quinn at 3 months old

Anyway – I hope you enjoy seeing this sister and brother along their way!

Can you believe Quinn and Peyton are already 5 months old?

They are growing… growing… and still as cute as ever!  It was so nice having them in the studio this past weekend – next session in a couple months, or when they start sitting up.  I can never believe how different children look once they are sitting up, then standing… and wow… watch out then when these two decide to crawl.

Murray Family - 2010

The HOLIDAYS!

Toes

Time for the yearly holiday breakdown!  Less than two months until Christmas, and if you are like me at all…. you may not have even thought of what you will be doing for holiday gifts & cards this year.  There is still time to get some portraits of your families or children to use for gifts and for cards this year – but with Thanksgiving only a few weeks away… that time will slip by very quickly.

Some deadline dates for you:

Print orders: Order by December 7th to get them in time for Christmas – while we may be able to get orders to you after that date, there are rush fees involved so to avoid… get those orders on or before December 7th, 2010!

Canvas orders: Order no later than December 2nd please.  Large canvas prints that are bigger than 20×24 please order by November 28th, 2010.

Albums… through Pictage you may be able to order as late as the 1st of December… but please call them to make sure.  Wedding album orders with a custom layout can’t be processed in time for the holidays from this point on.

Holiday cards… STILL PLENTY OF TIME TO ORDER, but get those orders in no later than December 10th, 2010 so you can get them back and have time to mail them out.

Digital files: Digital file orders we can get to you for download within 48 hours up until 3 days before Christmas if you need to print up something very last minute.

I’ll adjust these deadlines along the way if our pro labs happen to adjust any times that give you more time – so keep checking back.

Please call us or e-mail us to set up a session!!! Would love to do a session outdoors, or in our beautiful Ravens Nest studio in Denver.

Remember what it’s like to be a kid. Win a free portrait session.

What it feel like to be a kid.

I couldn’t help but post on this image before I’m even done editing the entire session.  This – to me at least – is what I remember it feels like to be a kid.

*You wake up in the morning thinking of all the things you want to do.

*You run – and when you run… it is always as fast as you can.

*When it is cold, your teeth feel cold because you are smiling so much.

*The woods is your favorite playground because it is open for endless exploring and adventure.

*Finding crawling things is the best thing on earth… salamanders, lizards, snakes, frogs.  For some kids… maybe you preferred lady bugs & butterflies… I grew up more like a tom boy in the woods. lol.

*Your cheeks are almost always rosy.

*Holidays were magical, and summers were nearly endless.

*Being snowed it was the best thing on earth, because it meant you got to make tunnels through the snow (I lived up north… so “feet” of snow were a regular thing.

Now it’s your turn.  Post the first thing that comes to mind that made you smile when you were a kid.  I get to pick my favorite out of anyone that posts before Dec 1st, 2010 and that person gets their next portrait session with me for free.

🙂 Time to to think about being a kid!

Loving my families this fall.

Some fun with my families

I have been having so much fun photographing families and babies the past few weeks.  I am so grateful to have so many of my families come back for portraits every year – it is what I look forward to the most is seeing families grow.  I received the most wonderful compliments this week from two of my clients that I’ve been photographing for a few years – and I’m so thankful.

Every year in Colorado we wait to see when the leaves are turning… and this year has been so much later than usual.  2009 we had brilliant colors for a few sessions I did on Sept 26th, and this year they are just starting to turn in the same locations.  The good thing is that gives us a few more weeks for any families that still want to get portraits done with the Colorado colors.  Message me on Facebook, e-mail me at info@fototails.com, or call me at 720-566-9770 if you still want to get a session in… times are filling in fast – but I would love to photograph for you!!!
