Having your newborn baby photographed: Q&A

The first few weeks of your new baby’s life are amazing and exhausting.  Because during the first few weeks your baby will change so quickly, it is important to capture those tiny little details: the fingers and toes, the wispy hair, the new skin… even the shape of the face & body will be dramatically different 2-3 weeks after birth.

New babies are one of my favorite beings to photograph, because the opportunity to document a new little person is one of the most inspiring things you can ever be a part of.

We would love to have you call us even before your child is born.  By calling ahead, we can note your due date and make sure to leave spaces available around the first couple weeks of your child’s birth.  But, we don’t ever expect that you will be exactly on time… so don’t worry!  We always try to leave enough spaces to get our newborn clients in, within 2 weeks of their birth for their session.

This is something that really depends on your child.  Typically 5-14 days old is the ideal time.  They curl up easily during this time, their skin is typically still has that creamy newborn look, and they sleep a little more deeply so that we can get those cute curled up shots, or in a bowl, bucket, or suspended shots that most of our clients love.   This is just a general rule.  Many times, especially with multiples, we wait a little longer…. but keep in touch with us and we can adjust the timing to get you the best images of your baby or babies.

Funky blankets, cute little hats… and while we always have some cute little things available at the studio – I always encourage you to bring your own unique blankets, hats or accessories in too.  Etsy has some amazing options as well, I tend to browse their handmade shops often. 🙂

On the not as cute side: Bring changes of clothing for you and your child.  As cute as some of those images are – there is always a chance of showers (or meatballs).  A few diapers, extra wipes are also in order most of the time.

If you have any images that you really wanted to get please to talk to us about them ahead of time so that we can be prepared for any specific images you are looking forward to.  While we can’t guarantee everyone those suspended baby shots, we will always work to get the images you are looking most forward to as much as each child allows us.

Newborn sessions typically take an hour and a half in our studio… this allows plenty of time for feeding, and getting them to sleep for any curled up shots.  Some sessions take less and some a little more, but it is a priority to get some key images – so if you plan out 2 hours of your time – we should be able to get some great shots for you.  We also offer sessions in your home – so if you feel it is too hard to get out of the house with your newborn(s) then please let us know – we are happy to make on-location appointments as well.

The most important thing is to relax… be patient during the session – if we take our time, we will get some great images of your new baby!

My thoughts – about my photography.

Photographer: Jeanine Thurston

Photographing for over two decades, my photography has been a living breathing thing that is sometimes very controlled and at times very out of control.    Sometimes my style is a mirror of how I’m feeling for the day, and at times it brings me back to my photograph with “rules.”  I know some photographers take the utmost care in planning each session perfectly; however, in my case ~ as much as I plan, it is more about what is happening and how I’m feeling at the last second that I pull the trigger.  On the other side of the coin, after so many years shooting film, I was bound by the camera and making sure everything was technically perfect and spending hours in a darkroom processing and creating unique textures – dodging and burning and left with yellow fingertips from my 20 efforts on one image to get it exactly how I wanted it.  Now… really not much has changed except the tools I’m using (computers) are probably healthier than soaking my hands in chemicals because I was too lazy to put on rubber gloves.  And… well, I get to see daylight – I would at times spend 24 hours in one run in complete darkness with my film & paper.
I think there are such a variety of ways to capture images of your children, weddings, events, and everyday moments.   The candid images are such an important part of recording details that you may have missed or just forgotten without the reference back.  Personally, I have thousands of snapshots of my children and much less professional looking images that I really should, and probably definitely less than  most people expect because I’m a professional photographer.  But, the candid moments are captured and there to look back on with my showcase pieces that you have large and hanging and walk by every day and still can’t stop looking at them.  They are the ones that you look at, take a deep breath and say “wow, my child is so amazing” and it brings an overwhelming feeling that takes you to events before during and after that image was taken.   As much as every photographer would love for me to say you should have these type of images done every year… well, I have kids and know the reality of such a production.  But if you can do every 3 years or even every 5 years – it really is an amazing experience… trying to capture that one image that you have hanging 24×30 on your wall of your child, you as a couple, or your family.
I feel very lucky that I can shoot a mixture of styles so that most of my clients are very long-term… I’ve been photographing them for so many years that I have actually went from birth to graduation  – from toddler to wedding, from high-school senior portraits to their first child.  It is truly an overwhelming experience that I get to be a part of so many families as they change and grow.  It is an honor that I don’t take lightly and that makes me smile every day.  I’m not going to lie, it is a very self gratifying job – I get invited to photograph in my clients homes where I see my images framed and showcased.  Many times my clients are so excited when I visit to show my how they have displayed their images over the years – and honestly – as proud as they are to show me, I’m humbled by that pride.  While my husband may long to have me work a Monday-Friday 9-5 job and have every weekend open for my own family… well, honestly… most of my clients are or become my extended family too.  It is a selfish and selfless job if that makes any sense at all.
So, while clients come and go – photographers come and go – I don’t fear the competition, I work very hard and I ride the breeze whenever it comes my way.  I keep my amazing clients as close I can without smothering them – and yet try not to let go.  When they drift away, I try to win their love back.  If this sounds like a relationship – that is EXACTLY what it is – I have relationships with thousands of people and that is what I love most about what I do.  If I have photographed you now, I am grateful.  If I’ve photographed you in the past, may our paths cross again.  If I have lost you, I hope that I can get you back.
All of my love to the very many people that have filled my life and made it possible to be a professional photographer for 23 years.  My never ending gratitude to you for the support you have given me as friends, and allowing me to do what I love most as my work.

Maternity & Newborn – two of the brief moments in time.

Photographer: Jeanine Thurston

Ok… so you’re pregnant feeling radiant, with glowing cheeks and a smile on your face.  Well – lets be honest, some of us feel that way for some of the pregnancy or pregnancies.  EVERY pregnant woman does have a beautiful glow and the state of pregnancy is such an amazing thing as it is.  Maternity portraits are a great way to document that amazing time in your life and remember what a beautiful journey it really was for you and your family.

Photographer: Jeanine Thurston

I tell people this all the time, and when you are pregnant – it is likely that you hear it from more than one of your friends, family – and even strangers.  Your new baby is born and before you blink your eyes they get big.  I’m not just talking about the difference between tiny bundle to crawling and walking either.  I couldn’t be more serious when I say they only look like a “newborn” for a couple weeks in most cases.  Don’t put off those amazing first couple weeks when your newborn is still in a slight state of slumber is the best time to get those curled up, sleepy time newborn images that make you say “Awhhhh”.  They make amazing birth announcements and a perfect way to start your child’s memories.  My children still point to photos of when they were newborns with pride and always ask for us to tell them stories of when they were babies – and my boys are only 3 and 4 years old right now.  It means the world to them as much as it does you.

Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.

My boys: Jeanine Thurston

It is hardly ever more apparent that memories are so important – than the moment you bring a child into the world, fall in love or lose a loved one.  Each person, place, thing that we love makes us who we are and guides us to make choices on where we will go in life.  Photographing love & life… or maybe it is photographing the Love of Life is what has made me notice the little things that make each of us who we are.  Because the older we get the faster time seems to pass; our lives can become so busy that we loose some of those precious memories that brought us to where we are today.  Images allow us a joyful recollection of past events – and take us to places we once were, back to feelings we once had, and are a gateway to what brought us to where we are today.  It isn’t just people… it is expressions, giggles, smiles, pouty lips & tears, it is creations of our work anywhere from building, to art or even cooking – and encompasses a lifelong journey.  These memories are not only precious to us in preserving some of the footprints of our path, but are a joyful way to share our past with our future.  Our children, grandchildren and generations to come can learn from our beaten path.  Learning how we once once lived, and who and what we loved helps them in their journey to their future.

It is way beyond a picture on a piece of paper – it is about melding the past & present, gaping  generations, healing old wounds, and shedding tears in memory of the love and life we have had, and sharing with everyone.

I remember my first dog, going to school, blowing bubbles, my grandma’s smile, the smell outside after a spring rain, photographing my first wedding, my wedding day, my home growing up…. and yet, the visuals of people’s faces, expressions can be faded at times.  I have an image of my son’s tiny feet with my husband kissing them, and one of me snuggling my 1st son, and although I remember it happening – there is nothing like looking at that image and actually feeling that same feeling, as if it was just yesterday.

Maternity “Quick Take Thursday” (QTT)

Photographer: Jeanine Thurston

Many of moms- to- be out there may have had maternity photos cross your mind.  This is a beautiful time in your life when you are pregnant and planning for the extra life or two… or so coming into the world.  All that moving and kicking around, and so many don’t have photos to go back to those memories – especially the last month or so of the pregnancy.  Some just think about having a maternity session a little to late, many just “wish” they would have done a session after the fact, and still some would just rather have a few precious images but don’t want to do a big session.

“Quick Take Thursday” Maternity sessions are an affordable way to get a few gorgeous images of that beautiful belly of yours before the new addition is here!  It is a simple 30 minute session where we work on getting just a handful of really beautiful maternity images of you.  I offer this session on Thursday mornings between 8am-noon, by appointment only at my studio in Denver for only $30.  Images are displayed online to view for 90 days, and you get 2 for 1 on any print orders during the first 30 days that they are online.

While I suggest doing your maternity session between 32-36 weeks, you can take advantage of QTT at any time during your pregnancy, and even use it to document how your body has changed each trimester.  Because QTT is a limited time each Thursday – times do fill up quickly, so please call to set up your time well in advance.

Please feel free to e-mail or call me with any questions at all 720-566-9770!

Always a great time for family portraits.

From retro to classic, indoors and out – there really isn’t a bad time for family portraits or portraits of your children.  Each session can be custom to whatever you love most at the moment.  It’s ALWAYS a good thing to indulge in enjoyable recollection of past events.

Murray Family - 2010

Welcome Baby Peyton

Baby Peyton

This morning the Rosales family brought in their brand new baby girl Peyton and her big sister Makiah.  Peyton was 13 days old today, and although she was actually awake for most of the session – she hardly made a peep.  Finally – right at the end of the session she relaxed off to dreamland and allowed us to get a few more cute sleeping shots.  Her 3 year old sister Makiah was just as mellow –  she played so nice and was so patient waiting for us to get done with photos!

Eyes wide open for most of the session!

Maternity and Newborn Portraits

It doesn’t matter if you’re shy or outgoing, I create a warm, comfortable environment where you may wear as much or as little clothing as you like. Children, husbands, partners and pets are optional. I love photographing them all.

Plan your maternity session between 6 and 10 weeks before your due date. If you’re closer, call and I’ll fit you in.  The session is done in the comfort of your own home… so set out some clothing selections or props that you would like to use and I’ll take care of the rest.  The session takes about 1 hour or so.

Plan your newborn session to happen between 0-4 weeks after your child is born.  Give me a call as soon as you can after your child is born and we will fit you in!
